Welcome to Ennovus Solutions
Ennovus Solutions works with businesses across the UK on turnkey wind turbine development projects. Our in-house team of project engineers work with our clients from initial engagement through to a detailed design and ready to implement solution. Due to wind turbines having many hurdles to overcome our process typically follows a structured and staged process.
For businesses looking to invest in renewable generation, a large megawatt scale wind turbine often isn’t the answer. However, small or medium wind turbines, more suited to a site’s energy demand, form a far more attractive solution. These are perfect for businesses looking to power their facility via a wind turbine.
Ennovus Solutions specialise in the turnkey installation of small and medium wind turbines. Small wind turbines can have rated powers as low as 5 kW whereas medium wind turbines scale up to 500 kW. There are of course a vast range of rated powers between the top and bottom end of the scale, so a wind turbine can be sized to your business’s energy needs. A 100 kW wind turbine would be well suited for a business with an electricity consumption in the region of 500,000 kWh/year. This would generate approximately 250,000 kWh/year with a high proportion of the generation being consumed on-site for the best financial returns. The energy and carbon savings are equivalent to powering 92 homes or taking 30 cars off the road each year.
Wind turbine development has many challenges before the project reaches an implementation phase. For example, all onshore wind turbines, except for small-scale domestic turbines, require planning permission. This can be a significant hurdle to overcome and often requires specialist surveys. Alongside planning permission, other barriers include grid connection, buried services, flood zones, and airfield proximity, amongst many more. Due to the amount of hurdles, we adopt a structured process so that only wind development projects with a strong certainty are progressed. As a result, time and expense is only committed to viable wind turbine projects. Operating through a staged process during the wind turbine development also helps to engage the key stakeholders and increases stakeholder buy-in and confidence for the duration of the project.
This will provide a high-level overview of the options and initial sizing for a wind development project at your business’s site. We will evaluate key development criteria which will help to shape the work conducted in Stage Two.
The technical analysis will refine the system design and provide more accurate yield assessments through specific design software and bespoke tools. We will also engage with the local planning authority (LPA) and distribution network operator (DNO) to understand the planning and grid connection viability. These two elements are key for project certainty.
The key objectives of Stage Three are to successfully gain full planning and grid connection approval, as well as building a full business case for a ‘ready-to-build’ wind turbine.
As the project scope and budget has been defined and confirmed in the previous stages, the wind turbine can be installed with no further barriers and minimal to no variations. Thus helping to ensure that the project is delivered on-time, on-budget, and on-scope with zero incidents or accidents.

Stages One to Three are considered as the front end engineering and design (FEED) of a wind turbine development project. The costs associated with FEED are typically very low compared to the overall project. Furthermore, it is important to note that the structured process doesn’t increase the turnkey cost as all the elements within FEED are required before implementation. The typical percentage split for each project stage is shown below.
Stage | Name | % of Project Cost |
1 | Scope & Options | 0% |
2 | Technical Analysis | 5% |
3 | Business Case | 10% |
4 | Implementation | 85% |
There are a lot of elements to consider in a wind turbine development project. Any element could potentially have a knock on effect to the overall project viability. This is why it is important that as many of the development criteria are considered from an early stage. Whilst moving through our structured process we will build on the level of detail for each criteria whilst also introducing new design considerations and development criteria at the appropriate stages.
In Stage One we will conduct a desktop assessment to provide a high-level review of the overall project viability. The assessment will also help to shape the development criteria that need more attention in Stages Two & Three. The typical recommended phasing and scope of the development criteria is shown below. This is only provided as a guide and the scope for each stage can be flexible depending on the exact project requirements.
At Ennovus Solutions we can tailor our generation calculations to the scale of the turbine. For small wind turbines we often follow the MCS calculation guidance. However, for medium wind turbines we use our in-house bespoke wind generation tool combined with location based wind data. This can either be MET office data or data collected at the exact location via LiDAR or other measuring techniques. Using accurate wind data along with the industry recognised probability distributions allows us to confidently calculate the expected generation for a wind asset.
Wind turbines generate a consistent profile, with low daily variation. This generation profile matches the electricity demand profile of commercial premises more closely compared to other renewable generation technologies. Commercial sites tend to have a high electricity demand in winter, which also aligns with when wind generation is at its maximum.
Our wind development and turbine installations are managed by our dedicated in-house project management office. As with all construction projects, the installation will be completed in accordance with the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulation 2015.
This means that we will take responsibility for the entire project, including elements such as site management, mechanical and electrical installation, fencing, site compound, procurement, site clearance, as well as much more to ensure the delivery of a full turnkey service.
