Sustainability in Sport

Why Sustainability in Sport is important

The national and global drive towards net zero is well documented and often a big topic within every industry, and sport is no different. Governing bodies, across the sector of sport, have set ambitious short- and long-term goals to aid in the communal effort of reaching net zero and helping to preserve our sporting landscape, as we know it. Without action, extreme weather will impact sporting events, with events being run overnight or shifted to different seasons, as well as health implications due to the lowering of air quality.

UK Sport are committed to an ambitious target of achieving a net positive impact at major sporting events by 2040, all in the aid of ensuring that ‘we can continue to create extraordinary sporting moments for years to come’. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have also set their own targets and are aiming to achieve net zero carbon emissions from operations and at major events by 2030. At a local level, we can help feed into the wider net zero targets and support our governing bodies in reaching their sustainability goals.

Why Switching to Sustainability is Smart

Sustainability in Sport provides an opportunity for sports facilities to contribute to sustainability targets, whilst reducing their operational spend, allowing reinvestment into the facilities that have become a key part of our community.

Supporting Governing Bodies’ Targets

National sporting bodies across the UK have set ambitious net zero targets. We can ‘do our bit’ in supporting their goals.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

By investing in sustainability measures and technologies, sports centres can reduce their energy demand and enjoy a lower carbon footprint.

Increased Grid Resilience

Reducing the volume of electricity imported from the national grid, reduces a site’s dependency on volatile grid electricity prices.

Reduced Operational Spend

Through saving energy, sites will benefit from lower energy bills naturally leading towards a lower operational spend.

Reinvestment into Facilities

By saving money on energy, this will free up some spare cash to reinvest into other areas, such as new team kits or refurbishments.

Perfect Opportunities for Generation

Many sports facilities have large unobstructed roof spaces making them the perfect candidate for roof mounted solar panels.

What Funding Opportunities are Available

Striving towards net zero or being more sustainable can require significant investment, which might be a hurdle for some sports facilities. This is why alongside a capital project; four different funding solutions (Supply Contract Integration, Power Purchase Agreement, Hire Purchase, and Energy as a Service) have been made available.

Each funding mechanism is structured in a slightly different manner; however, the important aspect is that the repayments will be less than the energy savings from the renewable generation asset, resulting in an immediate operational saving. By making funding available it allows your sports facilities to strive towards their sustainability targets without the need for an upfront payment.

An example of how a Power Purchase Agreement would work is shown below:

What are the Technology Solutions

Every sports facility is different, with a different energy demand, requiring energy at different times. Whilst each facility is different and deserves its own bespoke solution, some similarities across sports facilities can be drawn. For example, many leisure centres, with large sports halls, will have a high lighting demand and can benefit from upgrading the lighting and incorporating smart controls.

Equally, by virtue of having a large sports hall, the centre will have a large roof space which provides a perfect opportunity to implement roof mounted solar and generate clean green energy. A snapshot of some technologies available to sports facilities is shown below.

We are Here to Help

We have experience working across a range of sports facilities, and our expert team of in-house auditors, engineers, and project managers can work with you to find the best solution and technology mix for your site as well as implementing the turnkey solution. Some larger facilities might benefit in working with our in-house consultants or initiating the project with an in-depth energy audit (in-line with BS 16247 and ISO 50002), before moving from audit to action.

We had the pleasure of working with Ennovus, and we couldn’t be more impressed with their professionalism and expertise. From start to finish, [they] demonstrated a deep knowledge of [solar] carports, ensuring that every aspect of our project was handled with precision and care.” Sustainability Manager from a Council, following our Front End Engineering & Design work for a solar carport at their leisure centre.

From social, to grassroots, and through to the professional level, sport has the power to positively impact individuals and promote both social and environmental sustainability. Afterall sustainability and sport are naturally intertwined!!
