Why chose battery storage for solar?

Many businesses cannot have full control over when they use electricity and solar energy is only generated when the sun shines. This means that there might be a mismatch between when energy is being generated and when it is needed. Without battery storage, this excess energy would be exported to the grid.

Commercial battery storage for solar allows this excess energy to be stored in a battery, with the energy being discharged from the battery when the electricity demand exceeds the generation, i.e offsetting grid electricity import. This increases the on-site usage of the solar generation, improves energy security, and reduces the reliance on the grid.

How much battery storage do I need for solar?

The amount of battery storage required is dependent on the size of the solar PV array, the site’s electricity consumption, and volume of excess generation. It is not a ‘one-size fits all’ technology. Speak to our friendly team to find out what battery storage size would be best for your business.

Whilst wind offers a more consistent generation profile compared to solar, there are still times of high and low generation. Including battery storage will help to smooth out the profile of the generation used on-site, helping to minimise excess generation and maximising grid independence. 

For the vast majority of projects, lithium ion or lithium ion phosphate will be the recommended battery technology due to its energy density, longevity, and commercial availability. If installing a new solar and battery storage system then a DC coupled battery system can provide cost and efficiency savings. However, for larger projects we would likely recommend opting for an AC coupled battery system due to the improved flexibility and commercially available options.
