Following recent news stories about solar panels catching fire and the reports that Suffolk County Council has ordered the temporary shutdown of solar panels at around 80 schools following a series of fires, concerns have understandably been raised about the safety of solar PV systems.
But should businesses with solar installations be worried?
The short answer is no. When installed by a reputable, qualified contractor and properly maintained throughout their lifespan, solar PV systems are a safe and reliable technology.
In this guide, we take a look at the importance of quality installation, regular inspections, and ongoing maintenance and outline a checklist of key steps you can take to ensure your solar systems continue to operate safely and efficiently.
Why Are Solar Panel Fires Happening?
Although the overall risk of solar panel fires is low, recent statistics from QBE Insurance, show that the number of commercial solar panel fires rose 46% between 2024 and 2025 (from 33 to 48).
There are a number of potential reasons for this with expert analysis suggesting that most safety failures are a result of installer errors that occur during fittings, rather than manufacturing defects. As with any electrical installation, poor quality or rushed fitting, faulty equipment, or a lack of maintenance can increase the risk of problems developing over time.
Solar panels themselves are very unlikely to catch fire themselves, rather, the risk is more likely from secondary rooftop direct current (DC) infrastructure. In fact, 2025 Freedom of Information (FOI) data shows that DC cabling and connectors were the top cause of fires in 2025, being responsible for 49 incidents. This could be due to a number of factors such as use of incompatible connectors, water ingress and poor-quality site made connections or omission of DC enclosures around a site made connection.
Another issue is the ‘fit and forget’ mentality that some installers may have towards solar installations; a company will fit a customer’s solar panels, but will not make provisions for the upkeep, maintenance and repair of the panels.
Although the recent spell of extreme temperatures may seem like an obvious link to the increase in solar panel fires, the safety of a well-installed solar panel system shouldn’t actually be impacted by rising temperatures. Whilst badly-positioned inverters could overheat in a heatwave, this would more likely result in downtime, than a fire. A good installer will take into account the position of inverters, suitably size cables, and more, for best design practices, which will also help to prevent any disruption that could be caused by extreme temperatures.
These recent incidents highlight the importance of quality installation, regular inspections, and ongoing maintenance to ensure solar systems continue to operate safely and efficiently.

How to Choose a Reputable Solar Panel Installer
When looking for a solar panel installer, whilst pricing is important, you should review a number of factors before making a decision on the right one for your business. Always conduct thorough research and ensure that the installer you select is transparent, properly qualified, insured and willing to explain exactly what you’re paying for.
Some things to look out for include:
- Certifications and accreditations – Look for recognised industry certifications and memberships.
- Get multiple quotes – Compare at least 2–3 installers’ quotes on equipment, installation costs, warranties and expected performance.
- Check their experience – Ask how long they have been installing solar systems and whether they have experience with properties like yours.
- Ask about the equipment – Find out which panels, inverters, batteries and mounting systems they use, and why they recommend them.
- Understand the warranty – Check both the equipment warranties and the installer’s workmanship guarantee.
- Avoid high-pressure sales tactics – Be cautious of installers who push you to sign immediately or make unrealistic savings claims.
- Ask about aftercare – Find out who will handle maintenance, faults, monitoring and warranty claims after installation.
- Check compliance – Ensure the installer will complete all required electrical, building and grid-connection requirements.
Your Checklist for a Safe Solar Installation
Choose a reputable and safe installer
Perhaps the most important thing you can do when planning a solar installation, is ensure you choose a reputable installer who can carry out your installation safely. Look for recognised certifications and accreditations, as these demonstrate a commitment to quality, competence, and best practice. All designs and installations need to strictly comply to solar panel standards, including:
- The UK’s Joint Code of Practice ‘RC62’
- The UK Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standard
- The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) code of practice
From 1 October 2026, updated Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) requirements have been implemented introducing specific qualification and competency standards for solar PV installation, alongside other low-carbon technologies. These changes aim to ensure that installers and qualified supervisors have the appropriate training, technical knowledge and equipment to carry out work safely, helping to reduce electrical hazards and support fire safety in solar installations.
Keep up with regular maintenance
Regular solar panel maintenance is essential for both safety and system performance. Scheduling routine inspections and checks can help identify potential issues early, before they develop.
Keep your panels and the surrounding area clean
Keeping your solar panels and the surrounding area clear of obstructions, debris, and build-up such as bird droppings can help maintain system performance and reduce potential risks.
Monitor system performance
Be sure to keep track of your solar panel’s performance and investigate any unexpected drops in output or fault alerts promptly. Identifying and addressing these issues early can help maintain system efficiency and reduce the risk of more serious faults developing.
Have an emergency plan in place
Ensure that your staff understand what they need to do in case of a fire including emergency shutdown procedures and safe evacuation and fire assembly points. Clear guidance and regular training can help ensure that staff respond quickly and safely.
Ensuring your solar installation is designed and installed correctly adds minimal cost compared with the potentially catastrophic consequences of a fire. True energy resilience comes from partnering with reputable consultants and accredited installers who prioritise high-quality engineering long-term safety and effective asset management throughout the life of the system.
Although news of fires can be concerning, it is important to note that the likelihood of a fire caused by solar panels is incredibly low, providing the system has been installed correctly, using quality components, and maintained appropriately.
