Solar panels for businesses

Many businesses across the UK have invested in commercial solar panels to reduce their costs, increase their grid independence, and reduce their carbon footprint. With payback periods as low as 4 years and fully funded options available, at zero upfront cost, making the switch to solar for businesses is an easy one to make. If you’d like to find out how solar can benefit your business, contact us today and speak to one of our experts for your free quote.

Why choose commercial solar power?

With rising energy costs and pressure on supply chains from major brands to reduce their scope 2 emissions, installing commercial solar panels not only has short-term benefits but also acts as a smart investment to future proof your business. Levelised costs as low as 5 p/kWh for solar generation vs a current grid rate of 25 p/kWh, is just one of the reasons why solar for businesses makes perfect sense.

Solar arrays can be designed to suit any business, based on the available space and electricity demand. Roof mounted systems offer the most cost effective and easy to implement solutions; however, ground mounted and carport systems can yield very attractive results for your business too.

Our installation process

Our installation process is designed to ensure a smooth transition from initial engagement through to implementation and handover. Our design process is handled with precision and care, with safety always being the number one priority. For more complex projects, such as large scale ground mounted systems, we might recommend some feasibility work to help de-risk the project development.

01

Free desktop assessment

Our desktop assessment will provide you with a system design and cost as well as outlining key metrics such as payback period, indicative funding, grid electricity offset, and more.

02

Site survey

During the site survey we’ll confirm any assumptions made during the desktop assessment and better understand the site logistics and installation requirements.

03

Formal proposal

The formal proposal will be updated with any findings from the site survey and include the full scope, delivery timelines, and the capital cost or funded solution.

04

Installation

Our roof mounted projects are fully turnkey, meaning that we’ll take care of everything from grid applications, to scaffolding, and installation and commissioning. And all under CDM 2015, of course.

The benefits of commercial solar panels

Low levelised cost
of electricity

Roof mounted solar PV systems can deliver lifetime costs as low as 5 p/kWh for the energy generated. Compare this to current grid rates which are only going up.

Grid
independence

Generating energy on-site means that your business will need to import less energy from the grid. Combine your solar array with battery storage to boost your grid independence even further.

Zero cost
funded solutions

If the upfront investment cost is a blocker, solar panels for businesses can be delivered via a fully funded solution at zero cost with net savings from day one.

Cost of installing
solar panels

Solar panels, especially roof mounted solutions, are incredibly cost effective with systems costing as low as £600 per kWp. This means a 100 kW system would cost £60,000 and a well designed roof mounted system will payback in circa 5 years. Ground mounted and carport systems tend to be more expensive, due to the additional groundworks, cabling, and more complex mounting, but can still deliver costs of £1,500 per kWp and payback period of 8 years or even less.

This is all assuming that the project is a capital investment; however, if opting for a funded solution then the answer to the question “how much do solar panels cost” is easy – nothing!

The importance of feasibility studies for commercial solar panels

Most commercial solar panel installations won’t require upfront feasibility work; however, it is recommended that for ground mounted systems and roof mounted projects in excess of 1 megawatt that some feasibility work ought to be conducted. This helps to de-risk larger and more complex projects, as well as increasing stakeholder confidence.

Completing the feasibility work before the exchange of contracts for the installation will vastly minimise the variations in the scope, timelines, and costs. Feasibility work can include, but is not limited to grid connection surgeries, pre-planning applications, roof condition surveys, structural surveys, and gaining the necessary permits and permissions. Depending on the exact scope, after the feasibility study a ‘ready for tender’ or ‘ready for construction’ design, specification, and cost can be developed.

How much do commercial solar panels cost?

The cost of solar can vary depending on installation requirements and specification. Roof mounted solar offers the most cost-effective solution, with systems costing as low as £600 per kWp. This means a 100 kW system would cost £60,000. A well designed roof mounted system should payback in 5 years, or even less.  If your business’s position doesn’t allow a capital investment, funded solutions are an excellent way to investment in solar, and even better this can be done at zero upfront cost!

If your business can’t consume all the generation then the excess energy will be exported to the grid. Under the smart export guarantee (SEG) you can be paid for your export. Our sister company, Connectus Utilities, can help setup and manage export contracts so that you get paid the best rates available for your excess.

Rather than just exporting, excess generation could provide a great opportunity to electrifying an existing system. For example, an electric boiler for heating or EV chargepoints for a really green fleet.

Solar PV systems are often talked about as having a 25+ year lifespan. However, to ensure their longevity an operation and maintenance schedule is needed. This typical includes an annual electrical servicing and a module clean every 1-2 years.

Whilst O&M is often thought to begin following the commissioning of the solar installations, it needs to be considered during the early stage system design and before installation. It is important to ensure that maintenance and access walkways have been factored into the array, and future fall protection and access has been carefully considered.
