Solar Panels for Business

Thinking about investing in solar panels for your business but are still at the asking lots of questions stage? Then you’re in the right place.

We work with businesses and organisations of all kinds who either are already on or are just at beginning of their pathway to net zero. Switching to solar power can be a significant step towards meeting sustainability targets and the ultimate goal of net zero. This brief guide will help you get started on your switch to solar.

Let’s start with a brief introduction to solar power and why businesses should give it serious consideration:

In simple terms, solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic (PV) panels, aka solar panels. Unlike conventional energy generation, solar is a renewable energy source.

Three big benefits of investing in solar panels

Environmental Benefits
Solar panels produce clean electricity, which means cleaner air, cleaner water, and a healthier planet. Because no greenhouse gases are emitted while generating solar power, businesses are able to reduce their carbon footprint and Scope 2 emissions.

Supply and Cost Stability
We’ve all been affected by rising energy costs and concerns about supply in recent years. When costs increase in unpredictable ways, budgeting can be difficult. Solar panels offer grid resilience and, potentially, energy independence. It of course requires capital investment, but the cost per unit of energy over a 25-year period is significantly lower than buying from the grid.

Net Zero Targets
We’re beginning now to see more and more organisations questioning the sustainability of their supply chain. For example, the CDP (Climate Disclosure Project), which runs the global environmental disclosure system, revealed that in 2023 over 330 major buyers, with a combined purchasing power of $6.4 trillion, requested that their suppliers disclose the environmental impact of the business.* Businesses of all sizes make up supply chains, so it makes sense to take action sooner rather than later.

Improvements in the quality of solar panels

Advances in PV technology has resulted in significant improvements in the conversion efficiency of solar panels. Good quality solar panels will typically achieve a conversion efficiency rate of 22%**. Even the grey, British weather doesn’t hinder the performance of modern PVs, which work well in all qualities of daylight.

Module longevity and warranties have also improved, with many manufacturers offering a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance guarantee, meaning that your system will provide you with clean, green energy well into the future.

There have also been significant advancements in inverter technology. The inverter converts the DC energy generated by the panels into useful AC energy to be used within your premises. Inverter efficiencies have also improved, along with improved warranties, longevity, and added safety features.

Where to mount solar panels

This largely depends on budget and the nature of your business premises: do you have land that you could set aside for solar panels; a car park; or, the obvious choice, the roof of a building? Solar panels are typically mounted in three ways.

Roof-mounted solar panels

Utilising previously unused roof space is the most cost-effective and easy to implement form of solar. Benefitting from typically falling under permitted development, along with straightforward installations requirements, makes roof mounted solar a great option for UK businesses.

Carports

If your business has an on-site carpark, mounting solar panels on a purpose-built canopy can make great use of the space. You can maximise the benefits by integrating EV chargepoints into the development. Carports can also now fall under permitted development.

Ground-mounted solar panels

Ground mounted solar panels allow greater flexibility in their orientation and inclination, meaning you can position them to create an optimal and highly efficient system. These systems will require full planning permission; however, Ennovus’ in-house planning team can navigate this process.

Integrating solar power

To maximise the benefits of your solar PV array, additional technologies can be integrated into the system to ensure that more of the power generated is used within the premises. Solar PV systems can be integrated alongside battery storage to ensure consistent supply of power once the sun goes down. Excess power generated during the day can be stored in batteries for later use. Why not use your solar energy to power electric vehicles and create a really green fleet?

Choose your solar panel supplier carefully

The quality of solar panels can vary considerably, so choose your supplier with care. For example, at Ennovus Solutions, we only select panels from tier 1 manufacturers with SA 8000 certification, net zero targets and clear ESG policies.

Overcoming cost concerns when investing in solar panels

Investing in an energy generation system is a big step, but it’s one that will reap long-term rewards. Not just in terms of energy costs but in business reputation, too.

Many suppliers offer funding solutions that will help most businesses to make the leap to solar. Ennovus, for example, offers a choice of four funding arrangements that ensure net benefit from year one:

  • Supply Contract Integration (SCI)
  • Energy as a Service (EaaS)
  • Hire Purchase (HP)
  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)
