Heat Pumps

Wondering if heat pumps are worth the investment? Read on to discover why installing a heat pump is not only the right thing to do for the environment, but why it makes commercial sense too.

30 million homes and businesses in the UK need to decarbonise in the next 25 years.*

Heating them contributes almost a quarter of all UK emissions. If we’re to fulfil the UK’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, we’re all going to have to make changes to how we heat our homes and our workplaces. The sooner we start, the better for all of us and for this precious planet.

But where to start? Let’s begin by taking a quick look at some heat pump basics.

Heat pumps are an important piece of the Net Zero puzzle

Instead of generating heat through gas powered systems, heat pumps are an energy efficient system that transfers heat from one place to the other; typically, from the air, ground or water, where it can be used to heat radiators and hot water.

While heat pumps rely on electricity from the National Grid to power them – unless you have your own, renewable energy supply – they emit no pollution or carbon emissions at the point of use. They also produce more energy than they consume. For example, for every 1kW of electricity a ground source heat pump consumes it will produce 3 to 4kW of heat. That’s why heat pumps are a key step on the pathway to Net Zero.

Types of heat pump for commercial premises

Three types of heat pump are best suited to businesses:

  • Air source heat pump
  • Ground source heat pump
  • Water source heat pump

Deciding which type is right for your premises depends on several factors as we’ll now explore.

Are heat pumps expensive?

The cost of installing a heat pump of any kind is expensive compared to a traditional gas boiler, but they are significantly more efficient and can be powered directly through on-site renewable generation. This means energy independence, so you’ll no longer be susceptible to fluctuations in energy prices. It’s important, therefore, to look at the longer-term benefits for your business and for the environment.

The benefits of heat pumps for commercial premises

The benefits of installing heat pumps at your premises, whether that’s retrofitting or installing one as part of renovation works or new-build premises, are multiple and far reaching. For example:

Lower Energy Bills

Running costs of a heat pump are between 30 and 50% lower than heating powered by fossil fuels**. Further savings can be made by including battery storage and utilising load shifting.

Heat Pumps Also Cool

During warmer weather, heat pumps can be switched to become a cooling system, making them particularly beneficial for hotels and other residential commercial buildings.

Efficiency

Ground source heat pumps can achieve 400% efficiency and air source heat pumps 300% efficiency. That’s compared to the 90% efficiency achievable with a modern condensing boiler.

Grid Resilience

By combining investment in a heat pump with a renewable energy generation source, it’s possible to tackle your business's electricity and heating demands, drastically improving your overall grid resilience.

Lower Maintenance Costs

Servicing and maintenance costs of heat pumps are less than for traditional gas boilers. Plus, they have a considerably longer lifespan (at least 20 years) compared to gas boilers (10 to 12 years).

Business Reputation

Buyers are increasingly looking at the sustainability of their supply chains. According to the CDP (Climate Disclosure Project), “one in every 10 companies now includes climate-related requirements in their supplier contracts”.***
